It’s almost moving day, and your pet has no idea what’s about to happen! A drastic change of environment can be confusing even for us, so imagine how your four-legged friends would feel. Read on to see how to make a move as stress-free as possible for your furry companions.

  1. Set up your new house as much as you can before introducing the animals to it. Making  your pets feels at home at the onset is extremely important. Let them adjust to the new surroundings slowly. The loud noises of furniture being moved, strangers going in and out of the house, and the sight of an unfamiliar empty room being gradually filled with familiar objects is sure to confuse even the calmest of pooches.
  2. Don’t let your pet in on the action when moving out. Confine them to a quieter part of either house as you either move in or out, so they are not stressed by the loud noises of moving furniture. It may be a good idea to clear out one room first, and let your pets stay in there as you proceed with the rest of the house, or maybe even leave it with a friend for the duration of the move. Make sure your pet has access to fresh water and an ample supply of food, and be sure to check in regularly to reassure them that they have not been forgotten.
  3. Keep some of your pet’s old things. We tend to throw away a lot of old things while moving, from furniture to toys. But it would be nice to retain your pet’s favourite blanket, toys, food and water dishes and bed to help them adjust. That way, they’ll have something comforting and familiar in a brand new environment.
  4. Check your new house for any poisonous or hazardous items like rat poisoning/traps, holes in the fence or chewable objects before moving your pet. They are sure to be on an exploring spree once they start feeling comfortable, so you don’t want them finding anything they’re not supposed to.
  5. Once the move is done, it’s time to take care of the nitty-gritties. Find a new local vet, make sure your pet’s address is updated on the microchip or identification tag.
  6. Make sure they’re legal wherever you’re going. Countries, states and provinces may have laws concerning pets that you are unfamiliar with, so read up! For example, certain dog breeds are illegal in the UAE, such as Pitbulls, Rottweilers, and Doberman Pinschers.
