• New drone transport system to be launched in Dubai
  • A law passed in 2020 to govern the regulations pertaining to the use of drones in Dubai
  • This initiative to facilitate different industries across the emirate
  • It is expected to create new jobs and attract huge investment.

Dubai ranks among the most technologically-advanced cities in the world. It is quite evident from its infrastructure, upscale lifestyle, and plenty of “firsts in the world” it has to its name. In a bid to push the envelope, the emirate is all set to develop a drone transportation system, as announced by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai Crown Prince. Once this development takes place, it will strengthen the emirate’s position in the global tech sector.

Speaking about this development, Sheikh Hamdan said that this new initiative aims to give birth to new economic opportunities in the emirate while consolidating its leadership position in advanced technology research. He also said that Dubai has the right infrastructure, environment, and legislation required to employ this development.

This development will engage all relevant sectors and combine the services of manufacturers and engineers along with innovators to create aerial vehicles. Before launching them, they will be tested in certain designated areas. Furthermore, legislative bodies will also be included in this development for the purpose of managing legal formalities pertaining to the implementation of drone technology in an urban setting.

As per the vision of the Crown Prince, the government will take on the responsibility of overlooking the project’s legislative framework for its implementation. Right from the prototype development to testing and implementation, everything will be covered under this framework. A new law was also issued by the Crown Prince in July 2020 supporting the implementation of this project. This law regulates the use of drones in the emirate.

According to experts, the application of drone technology has a lot of potential for all industries. It will make the delivery safer, cost-effective, faster, and of course, environmentally friendly. These drones can be used in various sectors, including but not limited to security, food, shopping, health, and agriculture. Their application in these sectors will help reduce carbon emissions associated with current transportation modes.

This project will also benefit the economy as it is expected to attract huge investments, both from local and foreign investors. Furthermore, new jobs will be created in the emirate. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has also been signed between the private sector and government for this project to ensure drone transport operations run smoothly. DFF, DCAA, Emirates SkyCargo, Majid Al Futtaim, Fakeeh University Hospital are the signatories of the MoU.
