Dubai’s government has taken a big step to bring life back to pre-corona normal. As per Director General of Dubai Municipality, Dawuod Al Harji, recreation centres and public parks in the city will be reopened albeit in a gradual manner. They have come up with a three-phase strategy as part of which these parks and recreational facilities will resume their services after careful monitoring and strict following of SOPs.

This development comes after the approval of numerous eased restrictions by the SCCDM (Supreme Committee of Crisis and Disaster Management). On 12th May, the committee announced that malls will be allowed to operate for limited hours to facilitate people living in rental properties. In this announcement, the reopening of parks and private beaches at hotels was also approved.

The restoration of the services of the public parks will take place in coordination and cooperation with partners and stakeholders of the Dubai Municipality. Furthermore, other relevant authorities will also be coordinated with for the said purpose. This process will come into action after they have studied the relevant data and progress related to the global pandemic. In addition to that, it will be made sure that all the instructions as laid by the Crisis and Disasters Management Authority and Dubai Health Authority are followed.

This reopening of public parks and recreational centres is certainly a piece of good news for those who have been confined to their homes. They can now spend some leisure time with their families outdoors and enjoy some fresh air along with recreational activities. Both homeowners and those who live in a rental property in Dubai can visit these parks in the slated hours.

The initial phase of the reopening of parks has already started on May 12. Its conclusion is slated to be on 18th May. As part of this phase, the family squares and external tracks that were opened include Al Safa, Al Barsha South, Zabeel, Al Manjhool, Al Sufouh, Nad Al Sheba-2 parks, Al Liseily, Nad Al-Sheba 4 park, Al Twar 2 and 3 parks, Al Mizhar-1,2, and 4, Mosque Park, Al Qusais 2 and 3, Al Warqaa-2 parks, and, Nadd-Al Hamr. Apart from these parks, 72 family squares were also reopened in this phase.

After the first phase concludes, the second phase will be implemented on the same day. In this phase, a total of 70 parks will be reopened. This figure also includes neighbourhood and pond parks. After that, the third phase will commence on 25th May. It includes the restoration of Al Mamzar, Zabeel, Mushrif, and Al Safa parks.

Dawuod Al Harji is of the view that phase-wise restoration of parks will prove to be quite beneficial for the authorities and public alike. The concerned authorities and departments will be able to measure, assess, and analyse the situation continuously. Furthermore, it will also allow them to follow up and respond rapidly to any changes required. With the results of each phase available in a quick-paced manner, it will be easier for them to manage the subsequent phases in an even more efficient way.

In addition to that, this phased implementation will also assist in minimising the risk of citizens getting infected with COVID-19 that can be prevalent with the sudden reopening of all parks and recreational centres at once. The authorities have also declared that specific preventive measures will be strictly enforced. A group of no more than five people will be allowed to enter the park.
