The marquee event Expo 2020 dropped its curtains on 31st March 2022, but the legacy still continues. Defying all odds, the global fair turned out to be a huge success for Dubai, as the number of visitors crossed the 24 million mark. The glorious run of the global fair serves as a testimony of Dubai’s impeccable planning and pandemic management.

What will happen to the Expo 2020 site now that the event has dropped its curtain? This is a common question many people have since Dubai has spent a huge amount of money on setting up the exhibition that enthralled one and all due to its superior design and infrastructure. For the uninitiated, Expo 2020 will be converted into Expo City Dubai (previously called Expo City Dubai), a mixed-use, human-centric community.

Expo City Dubai – Continuing the Legacy of Expo 2020

Expo City Dubai is dubbed as a future city within the emirate that will open its doors for visitors, tenants, and businessmen in October 2022. However, visitors will be able to explore popular pavilions from 1st September (more on this below).

This new district is designed to offer a balanced way of life. Backed by digital innovation, it will support the future of living and working while prioritising overall well-being.

An Initiative to Create a ‘Sustainable’ Community

Expo City Dubai has taken a more sustainable approach, setting an unprecedented example by re-purposing 80 per cent of the environment created for Expo 2020. This is a first-of-its-kind approach in the history of the world fairs that started in London in 1851.

While the previous world fairs have been generally well received all over the world, there have been contrary opinions as well. In the words of Patrick De Groote, who is a Belgian politician, ‘world fairs necessitate expenditures’. He was of the view that a lot of expenditure was required to set up these exhibitions, while the resources remained stagnant. This issue, however, will no longer be prevalent as Expo City Dubai will use most of the Expo 2020’s infrastructure, paving the way for sustainability in Dubai.

Two Expo Pavilions Opening from 1st September

One month ahead of the opening of the main community, two Expo 2020 pavilions will start to welcome visitors. These are:

  • Alif – The Mobility Pavilion
  • Terra – The Sustainability Pavilion

Visitors will be charged AED 50 as an entry ticket per person for each pavilion. These tickets can be purchased from the official website of Expo City 2020. Furthermore, there are four box offices located in the Expo City Dubai from where they can be purchased physically.

Apart from the aforementioned, visitors will also be able to explore Garden in the Sky by paying AED 30. It is a rotating observation tower that offers 360-degree views of the surroundings by lifting visitors 55 metres in the sky.

Entry for children under 12 and people of determination is free.

Apart from the aforementioned, many other parts of Expo City Dubai’s public realm will be open for visitors without any entry fee. This provides a perfect opportunity to relive your Expo 2020 memories.
