Giving your kitchen a makeover doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Here are simple and inexpensive fixes for the most functional room in your house.

1. Hang art:

Why shouldn’t your kitchen have a little art to liven it up? If you have a stretch of wall in your kitchen, this would be a great place to add a big piece. If you only have cabineted walls, don’t worry. Add a small piece between the upper and lower cabinets or above the kitchen sink. Or, treat utensils as art, by placing them in attractive jars or containers.

2. Fix the lighting:

If you have just one bulb or chandelier in your kitchen, you might want to consider changing lighting fixtures. Install overhead lighting or use a desk lamp for task lighting. Another way to give your kitchen a fresher look with lights is by having under cabinet fixtures. Hidden lights make the kitchen more dramatic.

3. Get back to backsplashes:

A backsplash is a panel behind a sink or stove which is very prone to spills and splatters. Transform it to a focal point or an interesting wall. Use eye-catching materials like glass, wood, stone, have it tiled or painted or use a bold wallpaper.

4. Change your cabinet doors:

Get fabulous new cabinets on a dime by just refacing the doors! This involves removing your original doors, spraying them off-site and then installing them back.

5. Redo the counters:

Damaged countertops detract from the value and beauty of your home. Spruce up tired kitchen counters. You could either just paint them yourself or cover them with different materials, such as wood veneer, fabric or metal. Just remember that your chosen finish should be able to withstand daily use and heat and be waterproof.

6. Paint appliances:

If your refrigerator or oven looks a bit old and overused, try repainting them. Choose a rich bright hue if you’d like to make them the focal point of your kitchen.

7. Add a window treatment:

Lucky enough to have a window in your kitchen? Don’t ignore it! Play up a view with Roman shades or fabrics with patterns.
